Re: Tohatsu 40hp

I had a 1993 and it was dark grey. I think the blue and silver were from the late 80's. You should be able to order parts with just the model and serial.

Is the gear shift lever connected to the shift rod under the cowl?

Re: Tohatsu 40hp

Not sure on Tohatsu, but our Nissan has the same coloring as yours. It is a NS40C 361A-1 [69060]. The part in "[]" is just serial number. Ours is a '84 or '85. There is not any year designation, as far as I have been able to tell on the engine. I would have to find the original receipt to find out the year.

Give Elvin @ InternetOutboardsUSA a call. He has been active on this board, and I recently ordered some parts for the Nissan 40C and 18E, from him.

Elvin D'Angelo
Avalon Professional Group,Inc.
InternetOutboards
Customer Service
813-915-8888
info@internetoutboards.com

Re: Tohatsu 40hp

Tohatsu did not have model years up until a few years ago, but the color indicates it is a pre 93 engine. All of the 40C models take the same parts regardless of year so don't worry about parts availability. As to why it will not shift....There are quite a few different things that could be wrong, but here are the five most common reasons:
1) Shift linkage out of adjustment
2) Control cable not attached(either end)
3) Shift rod coupler has a broken split pin allowing the coupler to slide off one of the shift rods
4) Damaged lowere unit components( clutch, gears, tec.)
5) Retaining spring on propshaft has allowed retaining pin to come out.

Re: Tohatsu 40hp

Thank you, for your quick replay, yes the shift rod is connected to the shift lever, is it possible that the shift rod is lose from inside the lower unit or is this means that there is a broken gear, how hard is this job of dismantling a lower unit? Is there any special tool require for this job?

Thank you

Re: Tohatsu 40hp

No special tools are required. If someone removed the bolt in the lower unit that connects the shift rod cam stopper to the housing it might be out completely causing the engine to not shift. The Nissan/Tohatsu is about as simple as you can get to work on. They were designed for third worlders with zero training. But, if you have not done it before you might be better served by working on a friends engine first....before you tear your own apart.

I remove the lower unit today and push & pull the shift rod and the shift rod will go up and down, but still it is stock in gear even if the shift rod will go up or down. Any Idea?

Thank you

Any Nissan or Tohatsu dealer. If there are not any in your area give Tohatsu a call at 972-323-6003 and ask them to point you to a dealer.
