I winterized my 40c last fall and put it away for the winter and painted my boat this spring while the engine was still off. I put my engine back on and it will crank but won't fire. If I try new spark plugs and that doesn't help, what should I do next. I never had a problem last year with this type of thing. It sat on its back for about two months this spring, would that have done anything to it?

Go to the Engine FAQs, dammit.

See the article. "Outboard wont start".

Good luck, and let us know what you find.

Things fall apart....As often as not, things will go bad from sitting just as much as if it was being used. Pick up a service manual and start checking the electrical systems.

Since you had the motor off, did you recheck all the electrical connections (bullet connectors) for any mistakes, or not fully seated? Also, a missing lanyard, has bitten probably everyone, at one time or another.

The lanyard is there. I've already fell for that last year. I have gotten such great help from here, I forgot about the enging FAQ's, sorry. I also have the manual that I bought from Elvin.

It may be too late, but I've noticed that on the 40C the electric choke solonoid becomes unlinked easily when the engine is in exotic postures. The engine is very difficult or impossible to start cold without the choke.
Also, if you still have last year's gas, it may make the engine incredibly difficult or impossible to start. If it smells OK you can get rid of it a little (perhaps 1 part in 5) in each tank of new gas this year without much trouble. If it smells like turpentine, don't use it; when it smells like that its barely combustible and will gum up the carburetor.
