TOHATSU 40C BARLEY MOVES FWD??

I HAVE A TOHATSU 40C I WAS CRUISING ON THE LAKE AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE MOTOR REVED UP AND I QUIT MOVING IT WILL BARLEY MOVE AT VERY LOW RPM IN FWD REVERSE SEEMS TO BE FINE I GOT IT TO SHORE TO INVESTIGATE THE PROBLEM WHEN I SHIFT INTO FWD AND TURN THE PROP IT CLICKS IN ONE DIRECTION AND IS SOLID IN THE OTHER WHEN I SHIFT INTO REVERSE IT'S SOLID IN BOTH DIRECTIONS HOPEFULLY IT'S JUST A SHEAR PIN COULD ANYONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THEY THINK AND HOW HARD IT IS TO CHECK AND OR REPLACE THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Hopefully it is just a linkage adj or shift rod coupler. Have you drained the the lower unit oil and checked it for metal? If you don't have a manual, the Clymers is pretty good, about $25. <br /><br />PS: All uppercase is shouting on the net, and very hard to read.

Sounds like the propeller inner hub has torn loose from the outer hub.
