Need more power!8)
I was checking out the stock cycl. porting
It looks a little rough.
I'm thinking about cleaning up the ports when I rebuild her.
Any idea's on what to expect?
Any Carb options?
Where to buy a small digital tach for tuning and selecting the prop?
Where's a good place to buy the rebuild kit?

thanks

All parts are sold individually by Tohatsu and they do not offer any kind of carburetor options. Sport C racers tinker with the ports to good effect and any dealer can help you with the prop and/or tach. I think iBoats has both too.

The 40C is a peculiar 40, its light because its small. The engine displacement is more what you'd expect in a 30HP motor. So... think of it as a pre- stretched 30. the engine can't burn enough fuel to impress you at low RPM whatever you do with the ports. Focus on getting to higher revs and performance over 4500 RPM. If you are unhappy at 2500 to 3500RPM fuss with the prop ... maybe less cup, no cup... maybe just a teeny little bit of exhaust flooding to ease the prop load and let the RPMs climb to where the motor performs.

If you meant it had a rough idle... make sure it has a thermostat. Some like to race without one, since they don't care how it idles when they're racing... (others just don't like paying 4x as much as usual for a Tohatsu thermostat, no matter how lously it idles.)

It has a 4 pole alternator, you need a tach that allows it. Or thinks its a 4 cylinder,,,

Oh... I forgot to mention... the Tohatsu carburetor kit isn't like the usual ones. No jets. It only has a float and inlet valve bits, gaskets, and idle screws. The Tohatsu kits are almost twice as expensive as all the other makers, so its peculiar that they omit all the expensive parts everyone else includes. Expect to pay at least $45 for the incomplete kit and another $35 for jets.

Speaking of which, I ordered a set of jets for a 40C a month ago. My dealer only got 2 out of 4 and a backorder notice from Tohatsu for the other 2. They call every week to get fresh excuses. You can get the jets though other channels, Kai-Hin carb jets have numbers on them (you may need a magnifying glass), just google and pick a shop and order the jets by their Kai-Hin number. You can order different jets of course, but the correct fuel/air ratio isn't going to change, so unless you're accomodating operating altitude, you may not get much for your effort.
