I have a Tohatsu 40 tldi that was running like a champ, and had no issues with it what so ever. I was out in the ocean in oregon salmon fishing and was about to head in when the engine bogged down, it sounded overworked and i had a loss of power. I stopped and turned the engine off, and when i went to turn her back over, I got nothing, it wouldn't catch. I sat for ten minutes or so and checked all of the vitals, fuel lines, fuel filters, etc and found nothing. I tried to start it again and it turned over but sputtered and died instantly. I got a tow in from a friend. after letting the boat sit overnight, I put her in a trash can filled with water and cranked her up and she ran just fine for a long period of time from idle to the top end of rpm's. any ideas on what my problem could have been? thanks for your input.

Throw it into diag mode and read the codes from the ECU. Could be almost anything at this point.

Don't ran an engine to it's max rpm without load specially on a barrel. Anyway, impossible to achieve as the barrel will overflow once lever has been shifted forward...

It could have swallowed a slug of water?
