I have an old tohatsu 40 hp m#(M40D) which has 3 carbs on it. the motor idles fine and runs ok at full throttle, if you give it a little gas it works fine but if you try too floor it after running slow it will bog out and die. the only way to go to full throttle is to go from idle to full throttle immediatly and it doesnt seem like it has the power it should. what could be the problem? ( the motor is on an old 15' fiberglass skiff ) i would also like to know what size prop i should use to get most top end speed, and where i should go to get the prop?

Re: tohatsu 40 hp

No clue on the running issues, but I recently got a new prop for my M40C at internet outboards.com. They have a chart with what to use for a given outboard model and weight range. With the correct prop, I can plane at 1/2 throttle and seem to get twice the fuel economy with my Mac 19 powersailer.

The symptom is pretty broad, but, change your spark plugs and get the carbs cleaned. Not sprayed with cleaner. Actually have someone take the carbs apart, dip them in cleaner for three hours, put them back together and try the engine again.
