My 2000 40 hp tohatsu oil light is on and the buzzer is on, oil level is good and unit not overheating. A boat mechanic says the oil senor is good. When the switch is turned on light and buzzer start before engine is started. Should the alarms come on before the engine is started? How do you reset alarms?

Is it a 40 D model? If it is there is no reset. Which means that the oil sensor is probably bad...Or you have a bad ground....Or you have a bad CD module, etc. Anything other than the oil level sensor would be rare. It's possible, sort of, that you may have an overheat alarm issue instead of a oil issue. Main thing is to check your grounds and re-check the level sensor.

Assuming it's a carbed 40D, and not an EFI TLDI (you did not indicate the actual model), the sender will ground for alarm, so if working and the tank is full, it should read open.

Sounds like you need a Factory service manual at the least, and possibly some local expert help. How did you test the oil sensor? Did you note the change in resistance when the tank was empty vs when it was full? In the wiring component diagram, the overheat sensor is item 21.

i took the sensor out and slid the medal float up and down. It read open when the metal float was up and closed when it as against the bottom. With the wiring out of the loop. the alarms still sound. This may not be the correct way to check it. As for a tohatsu tech there are not anyone close and the folks i did talk to didn't seem to interested. thanks for the diagram

this is what i have found, on the top cylinder there is a hole on the back side where it appears something would be. from the diagram vice adm sent that is where i think the heat sensor would be and if that is correct then someone removed it long ago. the bolt is there and a bracket place to keep it in. someone let me know because there is nothing anywhere else. and i still have my alarms going of with the switch turned in the on position.

I would troubleshoot it using the Factory service manual as a guide.

I have meet the enemy and he is me. My grandson who is a auto mechanic for gm found where i ran a screw through a ground wire while mounting a new deep finder. It was in a part of the boat you had to put the wire out to inspect. I thought i knew that if you do or change something and then have problems that is the first place to look and thought i had done that. I forgot about the screws. Thanks for everyone who responded.
