Tohatsu 30hp Motor Problems. Please help!

I have a 30hp motor on a 11ft Avon inflatable. I have had it for a little while. I ran it fine all day on a lake. I took it out to the ocean and I let it warm up and I thought I was off but as soon as I tried to push the throttle forward it started to sputter and had no power. I put it back at idel and it was fine. I tried it a few times and the same problem. I took it home changed the fuel filter and the fuel thinking that I may have mixed the gas wrong. I threw it in a barel and it ran great! Ran up and everything. I put it back in the water and the same problem came back. It seems like it will run fine in a barrel or with ears on it, but as soon as I put a load on it it doesn't want to get up and go. I can get a little bit of throttle out of it but as soon as I try to kick it up it sputters and wants to die. I am at my wits end with this one and I don't want to drive 4 hours to get some guy to look at it for 75 bucks and hour. If anyone can help me I would be in your debt!

Thank you for any help
Kevin

do a cylinder drop check . while running at idle pull a plug wire off if it dies replace recrank and pull the other one off . if no fire to plug check compression . if it has 2 carbs one could be not putting gas to it .

I had almost exactly the same problem with my Nissan 40hp. (Nissan is rebadged Tohatsu). It turned out to be a bad fuel line fitting at the gas tank. Good luck!

The symptom is pretty broad so start off with the basic three tests:

Check your gear oil.
Check compression.
Check for fire.(While running is best using in-line checkers)

If all good then look at your fuel system really hard. Everything from the fuel through the reeds.

It will turn out to be spark plugs or a dirty carb, but it doesn't hurt to check everything

The last Tosu I worked on, the guy had his fuel line hooked up backwards. The primer bulb arrow was pointing the wrong way.:^ Idled fine, no get up and go.
