Tohatsu 3.5 4-stroke spits out gasoline

Had a gunked up carb on my Tohatsu 3.5 4-stroke. Cleaned it thoroughly. Went to start it, and it started on the first crank and ran like a champ. Left it idling in the boat while I ran to get a screwdriver to adjust the idle. When I returned, it had stopped. I checked, and it had run out of gas (I hadn't put much, but enough to keep it running for longer than that!). I added more gas, and it started right up. I then noticed that it was spitting gas out of one of the two carb tubes that come out under the motor head. It was dumping a little gasoline every 10 seconds or so. It kept running the whole time, and I was able to adjust the idle perfectly. When I finished, I stopped the motor, and it continued to dump gas every 10 seconds or so. It only stopped when I shut of the fuel supply. The motor was at an odd angle, because it was on a very light boat to begin with, and I was in the back of the boat adding to the weight. Could the odd angle cause it to dump gasoline periodically, or would the needle valve maybe not be closing completely? Any thoughts?

I'd guess it is the needle valve/carb float that isn't seating properly. But, you can't guess - try adjusting or replacing that, and if it fixes it, you'll know. If it is like my Honda 8HP carb, you can remove the carb and hold it upside down to see if the float is level. Blow air in through the fuel inlet to see if the valve is sealing.

You are dumping fuel out of the carb vent. So the carb is way overfilled. Either the needle is not seating, or jammed (or you have incorrectly adjusted float height), or the angle is SO severe that the float valve can't close. Odds are the float is maladjusted.

Thanks. Will check it as soon as I have a chance!
