My 1989 25 horse tohatsu ran hot then after that it had a tough time idling. I removed the head and noticed a broken ring around the head gasket. The pistons and the cylinder walls look good and there are no obstructions in the water passages. Would a new head gasket and water pump fix the problem?

It should put the engine back in good enough condition to find out if there is anything else wrong.

Re: tohatsu 25hp running hot

Thanks very much for the reply. Since I have it exhaust plate and the head off the engine still is there anything else that I should check for before I put Everything back together? I just installed a new water pump just before I took everything apart. I hope all the probelems are solved. Anymore tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just take a very close look at the interior sevvices of the block. Look for cracks, rough spots, etc.
