I am looking at getting a second hand 2006 25hp Tohatsu outboard as an upgrade for my 1962 Johnson 28hp .From what I have heard it seems Tohatsu motors are tough and reliable, so I wondering if the 2006 motors have any inherent issues I should look out for?

Year is unimportant on Tohatsu/Nissan OB's. Model/serial is everything. Assuming you are looking at an MFS25B. That motor is EFI, and very reliable; quite smooth at 3 cylinders. We have not had any warranty issues, and no major repairs on the 25/30B motors. As always with any OB, verify cooling and compression before buying. If it hasn't been done recently, change oil, filter, and LU lube, as well as the wp kit. As with any 4-stroke, do not overfill the oil; 1/2 to 3/4 on the stick is good. As with any EFI, drain the vapor separator in the off season. Best to disconnect the gas line when not in use, to avoid over-pressurizing the fuel system due to solar heating.

That year should be a M25C3, can pass it to a 30 HP for peanuts cost.

Yeah I have heard that all you have to do is replace restrictor plate behind carb and advance the timing by 5 degrees

Thumbs Up. Same down here. That's the current model still being fabricated in Japan for countries that have not banned 2 strokes smokers. Bullet proof motor, simple and reliable. Passs it to 30 HP and have fun. There should be a stiker at right side as seen from behind where states the current model, check,

Happy Boating
