OK I hope I'm doing this correctly. This is my first time posting.
I have a 2002 tohatsu 35hp tiller. I still need to get exact numbers but I am posting this from my phone and would like to start getting feedback. I recently replaced the CDI unit due to no spark. My buddy used my boat Saturday it ran great fired right up but would not get up to more than 14 MPH, I have had this boat up to 28mph with 2 guys and hunting gear. So after he hunts for a few hours comes back to the boat and it wont start. No spark again it appears that the brand new CDI went out. Any suggestions on the lack of speed due to bad CDI or any reason for multiple CDI failures...I'm not a mechanic just trying to figure this out...I truly appreciate any help or suggestions....thanks

What is your actual model/serial?

Probably the new CD is OK and the Ignition Coil just went out ?

In North America, a Tohatsu/Nissan 35 hp motor of that vintage is a Jet drive TLDI. It does not have a "conventional" CD box, but rather an ECU, and three independent ignition coils. Pretty important to identify the actual motor in question.

Re: Tohatsu 2002 35hp

First off thanks for the replies I appreciate them. I am waiting for my buddy to get back to me with numbers. I had them here but it appears my wife thought it was junk.. the year I'm going off is based on a dealer here in my area that I bought my impellor from. I saw a series # on the motor of 2000 and assumed it was a 2000 but they said based on the serial it was a 2002. It is a prop and as far as I know it is a CDI. I could be wrong just going off of what Tohatsu calls it. I was hoping that maybe replacing the CDI caused the Coil to dive or something but I can't test anything due to the boat not being here. I know I should have it here but I was anxious to start getting some ideas.

Also my buddy that has the boat is much more of a mechanic than I am so he will do most trouble shooting and testing on it. I should also say that before the initial loss of spark this motor has run flawlessly. The CDI or whatever the part is went out we replaced it and then I had the top speed problem before I lost spark again.

By spark loss you mean in all cylinders ? Untill that engine is not plainly identified it could be a 2 or even a 3 cylinder engine. Usually same ignition coil for the 2 cylinder engines and 3 separate smaller ignition coils on the 3 cylinder ones. If being a 3 cylinder and any of them is dead just replace that one and voila.

It is a 2 cylinder and yes I have no spark and one coil. I'm assuming I have another bad CDI but I was just curious if putting a new unit in could somehow cause a failure on something else.

Nope. You likely have a 30A. Get a Factory service manual, and troubleshoot the electrical system. Make sure the stop clip is in place :)

So it's a double ignition coil with 2 plug cables. Have not answered if not having spark on both plugs or just on one, advise. You're looking at a 12 year oldie, at that age anything electrical can fail anytime...
