I recently purchased a used Tohatsu 2.5A for my dinghy. To ensure that it gives me many years of reliable performance I decided to give it a good tune up. I boutht the carb re-build kit, the service manual, gear oil, new spark etc. In doing so I found that the 2.5 and 3.5 are the exact same motor(so is the Mariner 2.5/3.3 and most other smaller motors sold with a different motor cowel). Since all of the Carburetor specs are the same (main jet, needle jet, cutaway etc.), the only thing I can think of that restricts the horsepower to 2.5 is the reed valve.

Can anyone confirm that changing the reed valve will give the motor the extra HP? If so, where can I get the 3.5 reed valve, what is the part number and any idea of the cost?

Any help would be most appreciated!

Thanks

Actually I think the only difference between the 2.5 and 3.5 is a restrictor plate in the carb. Just remove the restrictor plate and you'll have a 3.5. I'm sure some of the more "in-the-know" techs that frequent around here can confirm if this is correct or not...

The center maim bearing on the crankshaft was different on some. Then it was the carb jets.
