Hi, Louis. The boat is rated for 10hp with tiller steering, 15 with remote steering.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

I'd be careful to keep your hp at or below the max rated for that boat as per your USCG certification plaque. Remember, horsepower ratings are now taken at the propeller instead of the crankshaft. This may help you determine the max. h.p. you'd want to hang on the transom of your BW. Overpowering a boat is foolhardy...you gain little and risk a lot!

I love those little Whalers...I want one of my own some day. When I was a kid I fell in love with the 13 footer powered by a Merc 20 hp that Bud used to chase Flipper around in!

Walt

Re: tohatsu 18hp on 11'4" boston whaler

Hi I have an 11' whaler and I love the little thing and I have had it for some 15 or so years and some friend of my parents had it before that. I believe it is a 77 model with a 25 evinrude on it. I have replace the tiller steering with telex steering IT HAS BEEN A PROJECT but I'm finished with that. People have always said THAT boat must run preaty good with that size motor. They are right it does run good and is alot of fun have not had any problems with it SO FAR, that does not rule out any in the future. None the less from my experience it has been safe and fun at the same time. good luck

Hey, Louis!

I was wrong. I double checked and with remote control your boat is rated for 20hp, which means that the Tohatsu would be fine.

Sorry for the error.

There are many illegally overpowered Whalers around. The fact that they seem to be able to handle the extra power does not alter the legal and liability implications. "Willful negligence" is the term used to prosecute in the event of an accident.

I had a friend who was prosecuted for allowing his 17 year old son to overpower the boat that killed him. Something to think about.
