Hi Tohatsu Guru, this is for you. Have just torqued my cylinder head, was found ok, what extention do you need to reach the 2 lower adjusting bolts number 9 & 10, the torque meter head cannot enter this hidden/reduced space bolts, could you be specific which extention to buy or name of propper tool to torque lower bolts. Don't tell me that you have to remove complete engine block to torque. This is a 2 stroke engine.

Re: Tohatsu 18 Torque Tools

I have a two stroke Yamaha that developed a water leak. I went to torque the bolts to stop the leak and discovered that I could not get to several of the bolts because of the lower cowling housing which obstructed access to several of the bolt heads.

So, I got out my Dremel tool and cut away part of the cowling. The part I cut is not visible when the top cover is reinstalled.

Now I can torque the bolts each spring and there is no water leak, plus my lower cowling housing doesn't get in my way.

One way to skin this cat.

Too bad they don't simply provide access holes in the cowling, with removable rubber plugs to allow getting to the bolts...

Seems an owner could do that on their own.

I can't see how a flex socket can help get to the lower two bolts on the exhaust cover of a M40D2? There isn't enough room even for that?

Did you have a question about a 40 D 2? I only ask as this was about an 18.

Sorry Guru, I should've started a new thread re this: Please see the new post about the exhaust cover removal and what I found, keen to hear your opinion on it.

I found a flex socket could not get to the lower two bolts on the cover so I had to take a (guess) on the torque values for those by using a slim spanner, hopefully they will be okay! I was interested to see the force was only 0.9kgm on these bolts which does not seem very much at all. At what interval do you reccomened re-torqueing?

Re: Tohatsu 18 Torque Tools

Some people pop the bottom pan, to get to the bolts, but I wouldn't recommend it. Another method(the correct one), is to use an open end wrench tip that has a 1/4 or 1/2 drive socket. But, the method preferred by techs that have been doing it for years is the " I torqued this one, I pull on it with a wrench till it moves, then I pull on the ones I couldn't get to with a torque wrench the same amount...IE The old educated guess method:)

My opinion:

You need to check the torque of all power head bolts after an engine has gotten hot. Other than that, 20 hours after any power head work, then don't worry about it anymore.

Others say:

Some good techs say yearly is wise....I think that's silly if you are the boat operator. Now if your a tech performing maintenance on a customers boat....Do it every water pump replacement. It's lot easier to bill your customer for the extra 8 minutes than it is to explain to them about how it's not your fault the head gasket leaked and they got a scored cylinder:)

Yeap, I call that " extreme creativity", go for a simple solution or die in the intent of retorquing hard to reach bolts.. Nice rubber plugs would be the way to go. As a comment, have torqued my Tohatsu 18 HP2 strokes engine after first 100 hours from new, expected to find some lose bolts, to my surprise all bolts were torque meter cliking ok when 21 ft/lbs was reach, so will asume it was still factory adjusted to max 22 ft/lbs. T,G, is there a Tohatsu factory code tool for the flex-socket you recommend ? If so, could you please specify the parts number ?

It's not a special tool from Tohatsu...It can be found at any hardware store or tool supply.
