New to the board...

I have a 2000 15hp (15D2) Tohatsu motor that's given me problems since after the first year of use. The motor sputters, coughs, backfires for about 15 minutes then starts to runs ok. Lately it won't stay running at all even with various choke and throttle settings. It runs a few seconds with lots of smoke and backfiring. I've opened the carb and all seems ok with no obvious problems - very clean and float is ok. So now I'm looking at ignition issues. With a M530 peak voltage reading meter, I'm getting almost double the spec readings on the pulser and exciter coils but the CD unit outputs on the lower end of the specs. The exciter coil resistance is within specs. The ignition coil resistance reads ok on the primary but reads infinite on the secondary. I'm using Clymers manual which SUCKS for this diagnostic procedure.

Any suggestions?

Take it in to a authorized dealer and find out what the problem has been for all these years...Or, start from scratch and look at the carb, reeds, timing, flywheel key and those electronic parts again.

Re: Tohatsu 15hp misfire

I did take it in to the authorized Tohatsu dealer I bought it from and they told me to "check the fuel/oil mixture" I use and charged me $133 for nothing. You can't mess up 50:1 mix!! I refuse to be taken advantage of again by these crooks. I came to this board hoping someone would recognize the readings I recorded and would have some insight to the symptoms. I've started over several times looking at the carb, no reeds in this carb, and the flywheel key has not moved. Again, does anyone have any ideas on my original post?

Sorry, my mistake, there is a reed in the fuel pump but I see no problem with its operation.

Here's the problem. You don't know enough to know that you don't know enough. I'm not saying that to be mean or to imply that you are stupid. I'm sure that you are not stupid. But, there is a basic knowledge set that you need to have in order to figure out what the problem is. You don't have that knowledge...Yet. As per my earlier post, any of those things that I named could cause the problem as you describe it. You have to start at one and then test through all of them until you find the problem. There is no short cut or magic answer for you. Also, the reeds that I was talking about are behind the carb manifold. I would be ticked off too if I was charged $133.00 for their idea, but don't lose heart. Other dealers will treat you differently. Good luck.

I thought the purpose of this board was to help fellow boaters! I suppied plenty of information that someone that has seen these readings before could offer some suggestions...not just suggest going to a crokked dealer. Thanks for nothing...won't be back.
