Does anyone have any experience with these motors. I currently have a 90HP Johnson (220hrs) on my toon and dont get me wrong it's not like i have money to burn but I'd like to get a new motor with a nice 4 yr warranty. All the reviews i've seen give it a good review. for the 115HP motor, control box, propeller, shipping, de-install my current motor and install the new one it's right at $9900. Thanks for any input..

Re: Tohatsu 115Hp Motor

If memory serves, and that is sketchy sometimes, they make engines for Suzuki and quite a few of the smaller Mercurys', Suzuki engines have always been very highly rated they just aren't real popular so service would be a concern so make sure you have a dealer close, a warranty is nice but if you have to drive 3 hours to get to a dealer it isn't so nice anymore.

There was a guy on the board, Tohatsugirl, that dealt with them, maybe shoot him a personnal message.

And by the way, if you are adding 25 horse to get more speed I don't know that I would bother, you may see 2-3 mph but not much more, just saying.

It's a Nissan, through and through. Mechanics around here speak very highly of these motors.

From what I have heard they are a very nice engine. I wouldnt spend 10k to get 25 more hp though especially if your doing it just for an increase in performance you may not get any. 220hrs on a Johnson is just barely broken in.

Actually the Nissans are Tohatsus. They are very popular internationally. I owned a 40hp Tohatsu and a 90hp Nissan and was very impressed with the engineering and reliability. Can't speak for the TLDI's but I would not hesitate to buy one. You can get more info in the Tohasu Engine Forum here. There are a couple of very knowledgeable folks there that can answer any questions..

Re: Tohatsu 115Hp Motor

thanks everyone. I'll make my mind up by the end of boating season. In SC we boat just about year round, depends on how many layers of clothes you want to wear in the winter :D. After some research on here i did find the Tohatsu forum. this purchase isn't about MPH as my 90hp does fairly well on that note. it's more about having a warranty for the next four years and knowing that i put the hours on it and maintained it. Thanks again everyone.

Tohatsu's a good brand, but I question the wisdom of spending ten grand to swap out a perfectly good motor with a lot of life left in it on a seven year old barge. That's a lot of money big guy. You could repair just about anything that could go wrong with the Johnny several times over for that. What prompted this? Are you having motor issues?

Big block 90 to a 115 isn't going to do much except save gas if the Johnson is still a carbed engine (not sure the year when they quit). Assuming you get 3000$ for the johnson, 7000$ STILL buys you TONS of gas.

Re: Tohatsu 115Hp Motor

Incoop,

what prompted is that i was wanting a warranty. No were not having any issues now since i had the carbs rebuilt about 6 weeks ago. the previous owner let it sit for almost a yr and they were gummed up real bad. i know this because i'm the type person (since i'm not that smart on engines) that i wanted to shop that rebuilt my carbs, to show me what was wrong before they did the work. I doubt i'll do it especially since my 16 yro is finally getting off his butt and wanting his Lic, so that means a car or truck for him. that's going to blow the new motor budget out of the water "all Pun intended". Thanks everyone for the advice.

Your 90 hp Johnson is relatively new--by boating standards. Unless it's just not performing right on your Crest, stick with the Johnson.

If you could advertise your 90 and sell it for an especially good price, I'd say trade for another motor. But, you should purchase what sells best: Yamaha, Mercury, ETEC or Suzuki (in that order.) All of these motors will do you a good job.

The internet is a great place for price comparisons. Popular 115 hp motors can be bought for what you've been quoted on the Tohatsu, and their resale value is documented. And, you can get service most anywhere--except for Suzuki.

Re: Tohatsu 115Hp Motor

I have a 1989 Nissan 90hp on a 1989 Nissan 24 ft pontoon, I have had it for 10 years, it runs good and have only had to replace the starter last year. I don't know how fast it goes, but we pull a tube with lots of people on board and have a 4 bladed prop. I think it is reliable, new plugs yearly and run a little stabil at end of season, run dry, then tarp down. would not be afraid to buy another if ever needed.
