Where on the engine is the part number to determine if a 9.9 has been modified to a 18 HP engine? I want to be able to determine if a 9.9 has has the power head replaced with an 18 HP power head.

Thanks in advance.

There isn't. You would have to pull the block apart and measure the internals.

9.9 comes factory restricted with different shape throttle cam mounted on magneto plate, if swapping complete 18 powerhead including carb to same base you could tell the visible difference. You could also have an updated 9.9 to 15 HP, or a complete powerhead 15 HP swap that will look same as an 18. The difference is internal 50 CC more. If you mount an 18 well tuned on a light sib/rib should give you minimum 20 knots at wot. Check with a GPS on a flat no wind track for at least 1/2 mile run.

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping there would be a part number somewhere. There are several guys that have done this for bass tournaments on the 10HP max lake I live on. I was trying to serve up an easy way for the enforcement officer to tell if it was an 18. It makes me mad when these guys zoom by the house and the legal boats, including my son, come by 3 minutes later.

If it really bothers you that your son comes late by 3 minutes including other boaters zooming by, some law enforcement will remedy the situation...
