Explain...

The oil side of a VRO Has been run with no oil in it which means no lube. If the o-ring has failed you will have fuel on the oil side of the pump not good. The sensor has been unplugged to kill the alarm so you no longer know if that is any good. That is a case of not using it makes it worse. Another reason to not trust it is you don't know why it was disconnected in the first place.

I agree, one should not just hook up the oil hose and go, but...... the conditions you outlined are easily verifiable and remedied prior to putting the system back in service.

Fuel pressure, oil delivery and alarm testing should be performed annually as part of your PM routine.

If you confirmed the system is operating as designed, it doesn't matter why the OP disabled the system.

Paranoia and finances drive most decisions. Very few if any are failure related.

But for how long? It's not like you disconnect the oil side and the pump stops working. That side of the pump is still moving and trying to pump. It is not like that side just stopped working so all that wear with no lube is happening. I would not trust a VRO that has been disconnected for years it is not worth the risk.

Are these VRO units not easy to take apart for inspection ?----They are not exotic and complicated.-----Mixed fuel would lube the o-ring on the oil piston would it not ?

In reference to my VRO, it was disconnected when brand new. I put it through the VRO flow chart and have taken it apart and inspected it. It looked brand new inside
