To repower or not to repower...

That is the question...

The answer may not be so simple...

From the beginning, Bought my 1st boat 3 months ago, spent the dough, got it workin right, and had a blast...

That is until the other day...

Out cruisin, motor overheats and now what?

Most of the details are already posted throughout the Mercury, Glasstream, Chrysler, and other Iboats Forums, so I am not going to get into those here.

I have not yet gotten into the guts of my Merc ToP to know exactly what is cooked, but the top 3 cylinders have from zero to 90 psi compression, while the lower 3 have 145-150 psi.

Best guess, I probably holed a piston, melted the rings in the grooves, and/ or scorched the cylinder walls...
whatever the case, I am now looking to make a very expensive decision, and would appreciate any and all help.

Boat=1988, 17 foot Glasstream Bass-type.

Is there any realistic hope of finding someone in the South Florida area who could reasonably and correctly be able to rebuild my Merc's powerhead?...

OR, should I consider spending the money I DO NOT have, on a different engine?

It ran awesome with the 115 HP ToP, and would hate to lose any of the power.

Can this hull handle a 150 HP?

Through craigslist and ebay there are quite a few affordable, read under a grand, engines available within a 100 miles of me.

I fully understand that no matter what anyone says, there is no such thing as a perfect ready to go used engine, and that some money will have to be spent on the most basic maintenance. Such as a new impeller/pump, etc. Obviously if I can find an engine in great shape, 5 miles from my house, for a few hundred dollars, I would be in Nirvana. But I am also trying to be realistic, and realize that I might have to spend more if I change from my ToP, to another brand or newer engine, because of controls, gauges, etc.

I would love to be able to have my ToP rebuilt, and if affordable and done right, is my first choice, but what should I look at in the engine, or shoud I even try, to determine if this is possible?

If, on the other hand, I need to go the replacement route, what suggestions would you have.

I have included a couple of prospects from craigslist, below. These are just the first I have run across, and by no means, are the last I plan to look at.

I simply want to get an idea of which direction I should be leaning towards, because this is bad enough being a noob at all this boating stuff, and having the engine blow, just as all the bugs were worked out, really and truely sucks.

Thanks in advance for all of your time and consideration.

Regards, Gus

I'd probably replace yours with a used motor. I'd recommend you avoid Force's though. They haven't been fully supported with parts/service for a number of years. Do a compression check on any motor you're considering.

Thanks Guys,
The info helps and I am still tryin to figure out which way to go...
One other thing, if I buy a motor like the one from faztbullet's craiglist, Do I need to get the controls, wiring, and gauges that go with that motor?

Gauges aren't such a big concern but you'll probably want the controls.
