To Rebuild or replace 40HP Johnson?

I have a 1990 40 HP two stroke on my pontoon boat. After loaning out my boat (I know, big mistake), it came back with 90psi in upper cylinder, and 0 (yes zero) psi in lower cylinder. Dealer tells me it is probably scorched cylinder wall. Estimates $800-1000 to rebuild. This motor has no tilt and trim that I would love to have. If I could find parts, I think I could rebuild if I could find a manual with good directions. May be able to find T&T on bad motor. New 4 strokes are so expensive. All suggestions are appreciated!

If you like the motor, and the rest of the unit (gears, etc.)is in good shape, rebuild! It's a lot cheaper than new, and you can break it in right and run it for years to come.

Tilt and trim is very good to have, but on a pontoon, it isn't as practical. If you really want it, go with a new one, because it is very tough to convert, unless you have another motor with it to put your powerhead on. If you can live without tilt and trim, and you are mechanical at all, get a manual and rebuild yourself. Probably do if for about 2 or 3 hundred. Let us know what you decide. Good Luck
