I have 2 Evinrude 1990 140 hp engines. They have not been run in three years. Yes this is the boat that had 80 gals of three year old gas. got the gas out fired them up no problem but it seems like they both smoke exessivly with a lot of oily residue at the prop. does it just need to be run for a while? ran both of them in the driveway for 15 min apiece.

Re: to much smoke

Before you fix something that doesn't need fixing, try them on a boat in the water. Running out of the water is out of their intended environment and not fair to the motors. Hint: Use 100% synthetic TC-W3 outboard oil and they will run with a lot less smoke and it is supposed to be biodegradeable.
EDIT: This is a reply to the smoke question and doesn't suggest going ahead and running them without making sure the carbs are clean. Gum deposits from stale rotten gas can actually destroy the motor by making it run lean on one or more of the cylinders.

Re: to much smoke

If your motors are 2-strokes then the oily residue on the prop is normal as that is from the exhaust. Not sure about the smoke, but it could be carbon burning off. Search "seafoam" on here as you may want to run some through your engines, it is a de-carbonator!

Were you running your engines on a hose? I had an experience recently where my engine ran fine on the hose but horrible in the water due to the back pressure on the exhaust. If you experience the same thing a carb kit will be a good idea.

Did you change the lower unit oil? If not a good idea!

Did you change the impeller/water pump? If not a good idea!

Hope it helps!

Re: to much smoke

The recommended is 80-90 outboard gear oil, it has additives to protect the lower if you have water intrusion. Always replace the washer on the vent and drain screw, that is the #1 cause of water intrusion. The full synthetic oil is superior.

On the older electric shift motors, Premium Blend Type C for electric shift.

I would also decarb it, change the impeller, and rebuild the carbs as stated. Look to the FAQ for instructions.

Re: to much smoke

The lower unit oil I use is the plain ol' West Marine brand. I have not had a problem yet. Some of the more experienced boaters will have a better recomendation for you on that one.

Looking down the carbs will not tell you if they are in need of cleaning. You have to actuall take it apart and look at the jets and all the little holes that can get clogged. I can promise you that 3 year old gas build up will require a carb to be cleaned. Get a carb kit for each carb, they aren't expensive and can prevent an expensive mistake.

Re: to much smoke

Theres a pretty good stream of water coming from the pee holes up top on both motors with the hose running. takes a minuite to get there. The gaskets on the lower units, can i get them at the auto parts store or are they special ones?

Take the guy's advice and clean the carbs. Just for kicks, look up the cost of a piston.

See that light at the end of the tunnel? It might be a train.......

Are you talking about the drain and fill plugs? They use nylon washer type gaskets and no,the auto parts stores do not sell them.Stop by any Johnson-Evinrude dealer and buy a handful for a couple bucks.
Impeller change would be a must do on both motors,as well as carb kits...
Just because water is coming out of the tell tale that does not mean the impellers are not brittle and ready to come apart.
