Can a incorrect oil mix hinder the performance of a motor? If there is to much oil in the gas will it limit the performance or will it perform fine? My motor will not get up to the proper rpms and I read in my manual that this could be the problem.
Sorry, it is a 76 40hp Johnson seahorse. Everything runs great but it does not seem to want to get up to the proper rps. It takes a while to plane out and then it will only run at half speed. A mechanic said that it may be running on only one cyllinder. But it runs great as i said and I wouldnt think that it would run that well on one cyllinder.
Too much oil can upset the fuel/air ratio. But having said that, it would have to be way, way too much oil. Unless you are dead certain what your excess is, you are probably better off to assume the problem lies elsewhere.
I am not sure if it has spark on both cyllinders, how would I check that. The mechanic friend I have said to have the motor running ans pull the plugs.
First thing to do is get a spark checker from any autoparts store. Hook it up, have someone crank the motor, and watch for a hot blue spark that can jump at least 7/16th's.
Another test would be to start the motor and pull the wire off cyl #1 with insulated pliers. Does the motor's behavior change? Repeat on #2. If you're not running on both cylinders, you'll know.
