Now considering a new to me used boat made by maxum. I know the bayliner hulls are questionable after several years exposure and the maxum is made by the same company brunswick which causes concern. Has anyone had a maxum any length of time to provide comments on the hull and have brunswik improved the construction techniques on the maxum as compared to the bayliner

I owned a 19 ft. Maxum powered by a 125 Force The hull was pretty heavy and the 125 was a real gas guzzeler. The boat had some nice features but was a bit lacking in performance in rough water. It was OK but I dont really miss it.

Thanks Mike for your comments. This one has a 4.3 190 hp LX which I think means a 4 brl carb. I think it will have enough power however I question the hull as being comparable to bayliners. I have read several posted comments on bayliner hulls with varying opinions and through my search viewed a number of bayliner boats. It appears the boats that were used as there intended purposes display the effects of poor workmanship, however the ones with TLC in other words Sunday driving only appear fine. Anyway if your former boat had enough horses would you have been satisfied disregarding the use of gas?

Brunswick also builds Sea Ray, and Boston Whaller. Maxum has always been a well built boat from what I know. Also well appointed. When buying a used boat care, maintenance and condition mean more than anything. Good luck!

Brunswick make/made different ranges, aimed at different customer segments. When they made Force, they had a wide range of possible combinations to suit any budget. Bayliner, Maxum, Sea Ray and more boats combined with either Force or Merc could be combined.

They even have more boat brands now.

The Maxum is between Bayliner and Sea Ray and has a much better reputation than Bayliner - appearantly closer to Sea Ray.

We bought a used Maxum 2300SC this summer. So far, I have put about 50hrs on the boat since July and am very impressed with the economy, performance and handling. As far as construction is concerned, there is one area on the non-skid at the walkthrough that has some hairline cracks, other than this I have not come across any defects.

In '97, I went around boat-shopping. Far & away the best boat for the buck was a 19' Maxum SR, (don't know the horse) 4.3L. It's the love of my life (well...after the wife, of course!). I've never had a lick of trouble, and she loves to go fast with an impressive mpg ratio.
Here she is:
Re: To Maxum or not to Maxum

Hi wmdm. I Had the boat out in some ugly seas and with a boat builder friend on board he commented that the hull was struggling a bit at about 10 kts, he felt that his own boat would pull 15 kts in the same sea. But if you're not into punishment they are a great allrounder, the build quality was good except for the cracking that maxum 2300 mentioned. The Bayliner brand is considered a good boat in NZ and we import a lot of 2nd hand stuff. It was a lot of work to clean so I've gone a bit more hard core and I'm changing to a 'hose it out blood & guts boat' as we got more fishing focused. The 19'Maxum hull I had would lift gently up on to the plane as against leap out of the hole, and I was told that was part of the design. Mike.

Bondo and I see the world through different prisms :D ! My scale would look like 1 - 2 - 3 - Bayliner - 5 - Maxum - Sea Ray - 8 - 9 - 10

myopic Kelly

Re: To Maxum or not to Maxum

Thanks for all the reply's by the sounds of it the opinions are varied. In my circumstance it is an inland water and will be used to get to my cottage on an island about 20 minutes from the marina. By the sounds of it the hull should stand up for many years as the waters are always relatively calm. The boat, although a 1997 is immaculate and well maitained as it was in and out of the water after each use, ie trailered. Other than the companion-way to the bow is there any other spider facture lines I should be looking for.
