To dual or not? (probably a stupid question).

So currently I have a single 140 hp mercury on my boat. The boat is rated for max hp of 140. I really like the looks of dual outboards and was wondering if it was worth going to dual 70 hp motors instead of the single 140. Just kind of wondering if I would get more performance from dual motors vs one. If it is not even a good idea just say so. I will not be offended. I am just always getting ideas in my head and this was one that I had and thought I would throw it out there. Thanks for your input. I will in no way be offended by input one way or the other. Still new to boating so I will probably ask more (stupid) questions as they come to me. Always like to get input from people with the knowledge.:)

most transoms are not wide enough to run dual outboards. no, you would not get more performance, you would, however get more fuel usage as a single motor is more efficient than twins.

Normally with twins the mileage goes down, speed is reduced, maintenance is doubled, the cost of matching motors can be higher, more things to break, ect.

The only good thing is you have a second motor to get back to the dock with if something goes wrong.

Okay, so my understanding is other than the looks and if one took a dump I would lose more than I would gain. So I will call this a no go idea. I have an oar if my current motor craps out, and am never far from shore. Thanks for the input guys.

(2) 70 HP engines theoretically sums 140 HP, but in real world boating will be running dual 70 HP with double torque.

.You would gain nothing except extra maintenance, extra weight, extra wiring, extra hassles. If your worried about you 140 CRAPPING out, Think about a nice little kicker 2-5 hp.....I have a 1993 Honda 2hp...it has SAVED THE DAY more than once.
