To decarb or not?

I have a 1989 (I was told when I bought used) Mercury XR2 that is an excellent running engine. I do a lot of slow trolling with it and have no problems whatsoever. Compression on motor is 140 to 145 all 6 cylinders. I am leary of the decarb spray because on my previous motor, 1982 Johnson 150,I decarbed as a preventive maintanence ,and high speed jet in carb on top cylinder plugged and I ended up throwing a rod through the engne case. I guess you can see why I have second thoughts about decarb spray. Are there any warning signs of an engine that is too carboned up? As I said beforer the engine starts easily and runs excellent.

neckman,

I do not see the relationship of decarbing and a clogged carb. jet?

I really do not see how the de-carb can hurt.

The risk you take by NOT decarbing is mainly stuck rings. That will ruin a powerhead as fast as "ventilating" it.

Ditto Djohns19

Carbon is a silent killer. Preventive maintenance is the key to longevity.

:)

Bar-b-q, you can either add the decarb to the fuel (SeaFoam, Yamaha Ring Free) or spray it in with Merc's Power Tune, Deep Creep, and others. Spark plugs may need a cleaning after all the gunk lets go.

That's all there is to it. I'd grab some Ring Free from your local Yammy guy. There is an initial dose for decarbing, and they suggest smaller amounts in each tank to keep it clean. Take some spare plugs just in case, but that should be all you'll need. Just follow the directions on whatever you buy, it's really a piece o' cake.
