A local marina is selling a 1999 Merc Force 90hp with controls for $2k. Is this a good deal? They are offering a written warranty (probably for 1-3 months).
What is the reputation of these motors as the only outboard I ever owned was a crappy '61 75hp Evinrude.

This would go on a 15ft fiberglass open bow. I want to get it around 35-40mph.

I honestly would not buy it. Especially for 2k. Theres probably a good reason that motor came off a boat. Force = problems! If you do go for it, make sure you check for good even compression & if one cylinders low dont fall for their pitch on de-carbing it & its good. Also a 90hp w/tilt & trim im assuming seems kinda big for a 15' but she would fly!!!! Id try for a used yamaha 40 50 60 better motor for probably the same price.

I appreciate it. Didn't know what kind of reputation these motors have. Is there any other used motors I can look for around 70hp $1000-$2000? Think Yamaha is on the expensive side.

Forces are good motors if taken care of. I have a '96 120HP that has been great. That being said, I think $2000 sounds too high for a Force. I could be mistaken. I'm sure others will chime in as well.

It's not that Forces are necessarily bad motors, but they were discontinued 10 years ago and are not fully supported with parts or service. That $2k price is fine for a supported brand but not for a Force.

That seems high to me....I'd say $1000-$1200 tops. According to some of the guys here the older 'pre-merc-ized' Forces (Pre-95') were a better bet.
Pay no attention to the 'dissers' of these motors....ask some of the guys here who actually know. ;)
My 90hp has been faultless in 3 years of boating. Force likes simple maintenance tho'.;)

The Force has no active factory parts support.Dealer service support is basically non existant,Parts availability is dwindling.
For instance E/J motors have dealers coast to coast. Also dozens of venders
on the internet. Many routine E/J parts are available back to the 50s.

The force motors are good motors, and like other motors, need regular maintenance. If it was treated good in the past as far as service it will serve you well, contrary to what some people will have you believe, parts are still available from merc,NEW, and the after market also. The force whiners always have to throw in their two cents worth ,as they have that right, but over all ,they're good motors if treated right with regular service, but the price seems high, very high, I would think around 1200.to 1400.00 for a good ,running motor. I agree , 2k for a 10 yr old engine without a full maintenance history is a wee steep for my blood...I recently replaced a dead 1990 Force 120 with a running1987 Force 125 for $400.00....(Craigs List), mostly because I have the old one and MANY spare parts that fit the newer one... I don't think I would do it at $2k, not without the advantage of test driving it..

That year of a Force has a Mercury lower unit so parts are very plentiful for that. Also, I have found tons of places online with powerhead parts and other parts for Forces, either OEM or aftermarket. I haven't needed any yet but have no doubt I can find them.

Re: To buy a 1999 Merc Force 90hp?

ive owned two 90hp force outboards in the past & my experience with them were awful! both lost compression in or two cylinders and stranded me. finally picked up a 1975 johnson 85hp & its ran great ever since. The mechanic who installed the johnson for me told me a story about an old guy out fishing in a new trophy with twin 120's that had both powerheads fail on him while helplessly floating out into the ocean picked up the next day by the coast guard with hypothermia. radio must not have been working or something, point is these motors, more than any other line have stranded and failed more boaters than probably all brands combined. They are a finicky engine, If they suck in a hint of water their done for, they have to be decarbed at the least once a year. they just were not built with quality to take on the rigors of real boating. im not just a "whiny force owner" just a consumer giving an opinion.

There's always a story like that. "A friend of a friend once told me about an outboard that stranded an unlucky guy in a shipping lane and was run down by a super tanker. My personal experience with Chrysler/Force was not too bad. I bought a 1984 18' tri-hull with a 1984 Chrysler 75HP non power tilt and trim in the summer of 2000 from my father in law. I used that motor pretty hard from 2000 to 2007. I deployed summer of 2008 and did not use it that year. Maintenance Items as follows: I rebuilt the carbs in 2006. I replaced the headgasket in 2003. I had to rebuild the carbs in 2006 because I was lazy and did not put fuel stabilizer in at the end of 2005. Besides that it always started and ran on command.

The 75HP would push my boat up to about 37MPH with wife, 3-4 kids, 2 dogs, cooler and usually about 18 gallons of fuel. It never left me stranded on the water and I towed in 3 other much bigger, newer, and more expensive rigs. It smoked, drank the gas, I hated the non power tilt and trim, and it was not too quiet. As for parts availability, I was always able to find parts from Fair Winds Marina in Annapolis, MD. They always had the impellar kits, carb rebuild kits, head gasket, & temp sensor. They are not cheap, but had the parts and were local to me.

Spring of 2009 I came home from Iraq and decided upon an economic stimulas package of my own and bought a new 90HP outboard with power tilt and trim.

I'm with everybody else, 2k sounds too expensive. If the motor was maintained well by its previous owner than it should last you a while. Just do the basics before you buy. Check the lower unit oil, and do a compression check. If it has only run in fresh water I would expect it to be in better shape. Get some type of warranty after installation if you buy it. After it is installed take it out and really run it. Give it a good work out over a couple of days to shake out any "bugs".

Whoa!! you heard about that guy too? Small world! and yup he had on a force outboard!

Chrysler made decent motors back in the day, unfortunetley U.s marine/force & Brunswick did not.

U.S marine and Brunswick made a perfectly acceptable motor albeit somewhat primitive by modern standards. Their motors were American made and much simpler than most on the market and thus dependent on having owners who weren't complete dimwits. Lack of maintenance and experience and support is what killed their reputation....not the design of these simple motors. All they need is some minor intelligence and maintenance experience applied to them. Of course, often...and apparently, way too much to ask for.;)

"U.S MARINE AND BRUNSWICIK MADE A "PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE MOTOR"

This has got to be some kind of a joke!!!

scroll through these force forums & you will find nothing but lost compression & broken pistons.

So, lets say its 1990 & your in the market to replace your outboard, your in a dealership that carries every brand of outboard motors.

Pick one:

FORCE OR MERCURY?

FORCE OR MARINER

FORCE OR YAMAHA

FORCE OR HONDA

FORCE OR SUZUKI

FORCE OR NISSAN

FORCE OR JOHNSON

FORCE OR EVINRUDE

add your forces up, whats your fancy? thats where a force belongs, at the bottom of anyones list.

Re: To buy a 1999 Merc Force 90hp?

The Force was a decent engine until Mercury got of hold of them. Mercury used self-destructing powerheads, stators that came apart, and cheaper trim fluid that dissolved the seals after 10 years. Not surprisingly, Merucry Force engines would sometimes self-destruct for no apparent reason. It is worth noting that it wasn't just Force. The entire Mercury product line was cr*p. It got so bad that they had to start reselling other people's engines under the Mariner label.

***********
and, as an aside, I have my doubts that Mercury is much better today. There was mercury factory rep on TV trying to sell their saltwater series of outboards. The host asked "what makes this engine better suited for saltwater?". The rep said with a straight face - "we used more stainless steel".
Hmmmm ......
Putting more stainless on an engine with aluminum block/heads/gear housing just makes the problem even worse since there is even more stainless to attack even less aluminum. It is quite possible that Mercury is still selling cr*ppy products with shiny paint.
***********

If you are handy with a wrench then the older (pre-mercury) 197x-1991 Chrysler/Force engines are an exceptional value. Cheap to buy, cheap to own, cheap to maintain, easy to work on, simple & reliable engines that last forever. Just make sure it is a solid engine with good compression and no salt water corrosion before you buy. Maintenance parts are cheap and you can get a lot of them from Napa or internet. Repair parts come from Mercury and you will get raped. If you do need something always check ebay first. The part that mercury lists at $250 is often on ebay for $20.
