That was very admirable of you to apologize. I do know a boat or any thing with a thermostat removed can overheat since the water isnt in the engine long enough to absorb the heat especially on closed cooling.

It is always nice to seek advise of people who know without making the asker out to be an idiot huh?

Seems to go around on the forum.

you would think the boating community would be a little well....... laid back.

Good luck finding the help you are seeking.

Overheating the 470 can have some serious issues.
1 Replace impeller /water pump assembly in the drive
2 Remove and inspect the riser for blockage(drain the A/F. a bit before you remove the riser)
3 remove endcaps from exchanger ,inspect for clogs or debris, check tubes using a .22 cal. cleaning rod.
4 Make sure therm. is in place
5 test run on muffs, should be stable at 160-175, riser should just be warm to the touch.

I did replace my impeller in my outdrive, I wish I could show you what the old one looked like. It was like new.

Im not sure what the riser is?

I did take off the end caps and rinsed that out with water, did not see anything really looking like it would clog it up.

There is no Thermostat in the boat, I took the cap or housing off and there was nothing to be found. Thats where I am shaking my head:confused:

This is what happened my last day I took it out. I was running the boat and the temp was about 190-240, I honestly do not think the needle went to 240 200deg the most. I know enough about motors to not let that happen, I shut it down right as a saw that. I let the boat cool down back to 100deg on the needle, started it up and on the water pump cover/housing there is a little hole for water to come out of when the seals go I believe?

So to sum it up, there is no thermostat in the engine, and water comes out of the water pump cover/housing.

If you are new at this...and really want to get your boat fixed yourself...and want to be able to use the good advice offered here (which by the way for I/Os is the BEST on the 'net I have seen) what you need to do is to get a factory service manual...and read the entire section that pertains to your problem...and then you will much more easily understand the advice given...if you are trying to fix an over heating problem...and can't find the riser...with all due respect it's time to get the book and read!
I am self taught backyard mechanic starting in the early 70s and that is how I learned to work on all the vehicles I have had. No internet then and mechanics did not give out advice so buying shop manuals was the only way and I feel the BEST way....
When I got my old boat the first thing I did was get the OMC shop manual...with that I have taught myself basic sterndrive maintenance and repair but there are still times when you need a good marine mechanic...since marine motors are different and you will have issues that do not crop up on vehicles....like the corroded anti-siphon valve that stopped my engine from planing the boat...I tried everything I could think of then went to the pros...fixed that and the typical Cobra shifting problem...been runnin good for the past 6 years....
