I have been trying to get some answers on some parts that came out of the lower unit of a TN28 that I have replaced the impeller on. When I say the parts came out, they actually fell out after the lower unit was tilted back to a vertical position when I removed the lower gear casing.. I have provided a link address to a web page that I have put pics of the parts on. (Sorry the quality of the pics is so bad)

http://www.whitewaterrecording.com/parts

I can't find a reference for the parts in my TN28 parts catalog. One part is an o-ring and the other looks like it could be some kind of bushing or seal?. The part looks like a black metal or plastic bushing, but not like any seaI I have seen working on lower units. The only thing that looks close in the book are the lower crankcase seal and O-ring, but I figure the parts couldn't just fall out. I have reinstalled without the mysterious parts and the driveshaft fits snugly into the powerhead and appears to work fine. What are these parts and where could they have come from? Is this really a seal I need to reinstall and if so, will I need to remove the entire powerhead to do so? I would hate to do some damage to the motor after all the work I have put in to get it this far! This motor is also very similar to a TN27 if that helps. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Adam

Re: TN28 lower unit help

Hi Fontanaman
It's kind of hard to tell from your pic's, but these parts look to me as if they are part of your lower crankshaft seal. If you look at page 4 of your parts manual (lower unit parts, I think they look like part#s 303,064 and 302,348. As I say, I,m guessing here a little bit. Let me know what you think.

Hi again Alcan!

Yes, I am starting to agree with you but I don't see how these things just fell out! What is required to reinstall? Will I need to procure a new seal? I don't see any sping in there either. I guess I should remove the power head and look at it directly from underneath, huh?

Thanks

Adam

Hi Fontanaman
Yes, that sounds like a good idea. I'll bet you find the spring stuck in there some where also. Let us know what you find.
