TM Shaft question

I read the available information on selecting a TM shaft length. My 17'8" Crestliner bow is only about 10" off the water, so by the chart I would need a very short shaft, maybe 30"-36". However, I would like to buy a MinnKota 55# Power Drive, and minimum shaft length for that model is 48".

My question is, does it matter if the shaft is longer than the recommended length?

Re: TM Shaft question

I don't see any significant problems with the longer shaft EXCEPT the increased risk of hitting underwater obstructions.
Backlash

Re: TM Shaft question

There is a sleeve on the shaft that allows you to adjust the depth of the prop on that motor. As long as you are not going to have to raise it up too high, you should be ok.

Re: TM Shaft question

I have the same problem. I have a 15' aluminum semi-vee that I want to put a powerdrive on but the shortest length is 48". I'm not especially worried about the length while it is down in water as much as I am when it is pulled up. My little boat will definitely give that trolling motor a pounding in rough water and the shorter the shaft the better (at least it seems). All that extra shaft length seems like would get in the way too.

I wonder if it s possible to shorten these composite type shaft without ruining them? Has anyone tried this.
