TLDI 70 Erratic Tachometer question

I have a 2004 TLDI 70 with about 25 hours. After 30-45 minutes of running time, the tachometer starts jumping around and only occasionally stabilizes. It settles down for a miute whenever I hit the trim. It always starts and runs great. The Tach always works when started from cold. One dealer suggested that I need a new, stronger battery. Another suggested that I might have a very serious problem with the Ignition system CPUs and the engine is probably missing in a way I can't notice. Has anyone heard of this problem?

What is the CCA of the battery that you are using?

Your battery is too small. In theory it's not, but it is in reality. Batteries loose CCA with age and wires build up resistance. You have probably dropped below the minimum to operate the engine. Or....there could be something wrong with the engine. But, there is never anything wrong with the engine....its always the battery.

Hehe Elvin-<br /><br />What Elvin is saying is that lately, it seems that every issue addressed here on these boards with a TLDI comes down to battery. If there is an achillies heel to the TLDI it is the fact that it needs plenty of juice to operate properly. The TLDI's have proven to be unbelievably reliable, yet as a downside, rather sensitive to low battery voltages. TLDI's are not very for giving when a battery gets old or cables get corroded. This is a frustration to many owners- but most often solves most gremlin electrical/ operational issues.

Re: TLDI 70 Erratic Tachometer question

Thanks to everyone who replied with advice. I will most likely get a new battery. I like the Optimas but it seems the only way I'll get 100Ah from those is to buy two.<br /><br />Here's a reply I received from Tohatsu about my problem:<br /><br />"We are well aware of this problem, would you please have the dealer call me<br />personally and I will explain how to fix the problem. It is an easy fix and<br />should be able to done in a minimal amount of time. Please contact me if you<br />have any further questions."<br /><br />I have not been able to find many shops in my area (central Massachusets) with TLDI experience. I will post any more details I get about this problem.
