Title and registration requirements?

I'm curious to see what are the requirement for your state. Here are some of the variations. In Indiana, all boats need title and registration, all trailers need registration and only trailers weighing over 3000lbs need title. Illinois and Michigan have similar requirements. Missouri requires boat, motor and trailer to be titled and registered. The only thing Kentucky cares about is the boat and non-resident can register their boat in KY if "it's your area of primary use". Indiana cops look at KY boaters real funny when they see a trailer without a license plate going down the road.

Re: Title and registration requirements?

In PA, all boats that are powered (even if it's electric) needs to be registered with PA Fish & Boat Commission. All trailers need to be registered with PennDOT. Trailer reg is only $6/yr boat is $39 for two years (differs by size).

Additionally, even kayaks and canoes and the like have to have some sort of sticker on them to be launched at any state park and maybe some other waterways.

One NICE thing about PA is that titling is optional for any boat boat older than 1997. So if you buy an old boat and the owner doesn't have any paperwork, as long as it has PA numbers on it, it's real easy to get registered in your name. Once a boat is titled though, it must stay titled. Trailer though, are still apparently a nightmare without proper paperwork.

My first boat I registered in KY because I didn't have to pay sales tax.... KY changed the rules now, and you have to pay KY sales tax when you register/title transfer a newly purchased boat. I did title & plate the trailer in Indiana since the tow vehicle was...

On my new boat, I registered both boat and trailer in Indiana cause I would have to pay tax on it either way....

I feel like I'm taxed to death! Taxed on my paycheck, taxed when I spend my paycheck!!

Adding to what avenger79 said for Wisconsin; You have the option to title boats less than 16' in length. I have done this for several boats now, and have sold 2 of them out of state, so it makes everything go smoother for the new owner.

They make it real easy, even for boats that you have bought out-of state. The last one was from Minnesota, had never been titled, wasn't registered in 4 years. Fill out the application and send in the check, got a title in 4 weeks.

For boats 16-26 feet, new title, and 3 years registration is $37.

Iowa rules: (some c&p for my conveniencce)

All boats must be registered except for inflatable vessels that are 7 feet or less in length and canoes or kayaks that are 13 feet or less in length. Coast Guard documented vessels are also subject to registration.

Titles are issued on all registered boats in Iowa except those which are Coast Guard documented. *This is a little misleading because titles are only required on boats 17' or longer. It is also very difficult to find this little scrap of information on the vast majority of pertinent websites.*

Boat trailer registration is required in Iowa. Titling is required on boat trailers weighing over 2,000 lbs.

One quirk in Iowa is that you register and title boats at the County Recorder's office and register and title trailers at the County Treasurer.

A trailer has vehicle registration in Ontario. You do it the same place as your car. Get the plate once and it good forever.
Boats are registered with Canada customs.

Owners of all recreational vessels powered by engines of 10 horsepower (7.5 kilowatts) or more must license or register these vessels, regardless of where they operate them in Canada. The licence number helps law enforcement and search and rescue officials trace a pleasure craft to its owner.

There is no fee for obtaining a pleasure craft licence.

 dang....my trailer cost more then that to reg. for one year. The boat is outrageous.

Isn't it crazy how it varies from state to state? Why couldn't they just standardized it and stick with it?
