I just wanted to hear about what everyone thinks about tires. What trailer tires do you buy? How often? High end, low end?............................................................................

Re: Tires!!!

I have a wide range of choices for my barge trailer. I can choose between Tow Masters and...................:p

I run Tow Masters. Fine so far except for the one I hit a curb with last year. It developed a blister and had to go bye bye, which is always a pain becasue no one carries my tires. I can get them, but it takes a while.

Up to last year the horse trailer had Goodyear Marathons (DOM 1996). New tires are Tow Masters. The boat trailer has General ST tires on it (DOM 2002). New Tow Masters being installed the end of the week.

Re: Tires!!!

I'm unaware of any really excellent(like Michelin) boat trailer tires, so I replace mine(Carlisles) every 3 years, keep 'em pumped up to recommended pressure, keep a good spare and a jack, and hope/pray for the best!;)

I run Goodyear marathons. They seem to be very high quality and they're a radial too. A lot of trailer tires you'll find are bias ply.

Re: Tires!!!

Why does it matter? With manufacturers outsourcing (sometimes with each other!) tire buying is a crap shoot. Checking with DOT for recalls and making sure the tire has a DOT certification and recent date of manufacture is good procedure. Trailer tires are usually mis-used and neglected so I do not rely on user opinions.

Re: Tires!!!

In 30 plus year of boating I have never had a set wear out. Dry rot always gets them so I run the cheapest ones I can find at the time and replace about ever 5 years. I do keep them at the tire recommended inflation and buy the correct load range and I do a walk around inspection before ever tow and never have had a problem. Right or wrong it is my belief that tires fail is due to poor alignment and under inflation or over loading 99 out of 100 times.

The present set is the Kendra Load stars 20.5 X 8.0-10 LRE

Kenda Loadstar - About year 5 on the current set. Live in MN so dry rot isn't much of an issue, my tires usually die from sharp objects and bad boat launches.

Anyone else hear about the Mythbuster's square tire test? Apparently square tires are about to become the norm! JK!!

although I really enjoy mythbusters, that piece was horrible! The diffs on the truck were not welded, so offsetting the tires 45 degrees was pointless. Also, when they did the hill climb, the truck was in 2x4 when they did the control test with round tires, but in 4x4 low range for the square tire test... Yeah, not a fair comparison.

Your right smoking I too really enjoy the show but often find the results flawed by either dissimilar testing methods or unrealistic scenarios. I typically run whatever tires are on sale at farm and fleet when I need them.

Re: Tires!!!

After having two very expensive repairs on my trailer caused by tire blow outs I wouldn't ever have any Goodyear marathon tires within a hundred miles of my trailer. As of right now I'm using Maxis Tires, I think they're the best out there in the trailer tire world. ldj :):)

What was the damage? Single or tandem axle? Trailer weight?

The Carlisles, Marathons etc are pure junk.
