So, what would be the negative/s of having two tires that have similar tread design but not identical? Mine are all match, I'm just wondering.

On a trailer? Not much as long as they are the same size.

On a car is a different story especially if on the front. It may cause it to handle kinda funny...

Compound is as important as tread.

Softer compound on front causes oversteer, harder on front understeer.

If they are the drive tires they shouldn't be that noticable but if they are on the steer end you might experience some slight vibration and uneven wear eventually. I would not recomend it for anything with traction control or radial tuned suspension and or front wheel drive. Just my .02

For the average driver, I doubt if it makes a huge difference.

it'll make a huge difference the first time you try a panic stop or swerve to avoid some kids.
