Went looking for new tires for boat trailer. 1997 originals starting to dry rot(205 75 d14)
gave one guy the numbers and he said the d14 stood for steel belted tires and recommended I get radials.

What is the difference between D14's and R14's?
also had 4 ply radials and 6 ply..obviously 6 ply is better made but is it worth it?

Re: Tires radials or steel belted?

Skycam,

MOST radials are steel belted. There are a few that are not, but they are rare.

R=radial

D=load range

I suspect your originals were not radials. They MAY have been steel belted bias ply.

Radials are fine for a trailer, as long as.

1. They ARE NOT passenger car or light truck tires.

2. They are "ST" designation. "ST"=special trailer.

If your load range is OK with 4 ply, those will be fine.
