Tire splits question

I bought two new 4.80 x 8.00 tires and rims a few months ago. They probably have less than 200 miles on them. I noticed yesterday there are splits in the sidewalls. One tire has several and using a straight pin I found that one is 1/8 in deep. The splits run perpendicular to the rotation. Some are over 2 inches long. Does anyone know what the cause could be.
Thanks

Re: Tire splits question

You don't say what size rig they're on but splits could suggest there too much weight.
Do the tyres flatten out a lot? Is the inflation OK, 40lbs or more?
Is the suspension OK?
Otherwise you could have a fault, either way the tyre agent could be your most helpful assistant.
Ross

nc4z,

If the sidewalls are split, those tires have had it. They're not safe.

I agree that underinflation was probably the culprit.

Re: Tire splits question

The sun is your tires biggest enemy.Under-inflation is second. If you want them to last,
rinse them off after use, and keep them in the shade or cover them..................TOMMY :)
