Tire rating/capacity?

My trailer (tandem axle) is rated @ 5000 lbs. load capacity. My tires indicate 1750 lbs. ea.

So...can I assume 4 x 1750 = 7000 lbs.?

Also, is there any benefit to up-sizing from 14" tires/wheels to 15"?

Danny i dont see any benefit to upsizing the tires.

If you have a load capacity of 5000 lbs I would say that those tires would be sufficient to do what that trailer was designed for. The axles under the trailer also have a load rating on them. Probably 3000/3500 lbs. Its not just tires or trailer that change load capacity. Its an overall design specification (tires axles frame and suspension). The GVW (gross vehicle weight) is probably around 6500/6800 lbs which = boat, trailer, all the liquids and accessories on the boat.

Increasing tire size to a higher load rating on a tandem may let you have one flat and still continue to a repair shop...that's why I would do it. But you don't always need to increase tire diameter to get it. Just upgrading to a higher ply tire on the same wheel can be done. I did this and there was virtually no price difference in the tires...but I had to ask the trailer shop to order them.

Re: Tire rating/capacity?

There are two advantages in switching from 14" to 15" tires. #1 is rolling resistance. A larger diameter tire rolls easier than a smaller one so you will notice a difference in towing and slightly better fuel economy. #2 15" tires are available with higher load ratings. Yes -- there are 14 and 15 inch tires with nearly equal ratings. However the upper end of the 15" tire size range will provide higher capacities. Is it necessary to switch? In this case I would say no. But if you desire to switch to 15" wheels and tires, choose the largest load rating that will fit under the fenders.
