Tire Question

I just replaced my trailer tires, and have a question about air pressure. The tire dealer set the air pressure
at I think 40 psi. The tires say max load at 50 psi. The sticker on the trailer lists the pressure at something else.
Which number should I use???? I came home from the lake yesterday, and the tire side walls were slightly warm.
Is this normal??? or could it be related to the tir pressure???
Thanks

Re: Tire Question

Howdy, AP.

Trailer tires are intended to run at higher pressures than auto tires.

Look at the load rating on the tire. If you are at about half of that 40psi is probably okay. Near the limit? 50psi. In between? 45psi.

My tires are rated for 1350lb, my rig weighs about 2000 loaded, so I run 45psi usually, but 50psi when I have added a lot of stuff for a long distance haul.

Good luck. :)

Re: Tire Question

My trailer and boat run about 3200 pounds and the tires say 50psi. I run right at 50. I tried a little lower and was heating up the sidewalls more than I was comfortable with. Don't want to take a chance at a blowout with that much weight on the highway.

Re: Tire Question

Remember, going down the highway, you will probably hit some bumps. The compression load on the tires vary with the up and down movement of the loaded trailer. I run the max sidewall pressure cold and trailer from the midwest to the east coast every summer for 6 years (tandem axle 5,000 load) and never had a tire problem.
