I just bought a loadrite trailer that carries a 1500 lb. 18 ft. boat and has st205/75d-14 tires.
The tires give a max. pressure on the side wall of 50 p.s.i. cold.
What should the tire pressure be kept at for high way travel?
Also how should the safety chains be attached to the trailer? The trailer I bought has no chains on it.
Bill

Re: TIRE PRESSURE

first i believe all the states require safety chains that would be the first thing i would add second the tires should be at 50 at all times if thats what is called for on the side wall i run mine at 50 in the cool or extreme hot weather all the time also people will have different opinions on how to hook the chains me i put one under one over

Re: TIRE PRESSURE

Cross the chains under the tongue. That makes a cradle to catch the tongue in the event of a disconnect.

I'll add, connect the chains to the trailer tongue, most of the time they are just bolted in place. If your not sure, try to find some trailers to look at for examples.

Re: TIRE PRESSURE

When a side wall says "50 psi cold" they mean check it when it's cold... "They" allow for increased pressure after the tire has been running and is warmer.

Don't run it, then check the pressure and let air out to get to 50 psi. Air pressure will be too low then.

Ayuh,..... Like They all Said,.......

The Safety Chains are Usually attached using 1 of the 2 bolts that holds the Coupler to the Tongue,.....
They're Usually 1/2" Bolts,....... That's a 3/4ths" Wrench.........

Thanks for the replys,
I will take your advice and see how other trailers have the chains attached, and do mine the same way. Crossing under the tongue makes sence in case of a dissconnect from the ball.
I attached the ball to my truck using a large wrench and a 3 ft. long pipe to get better leverage. Also I put some perminate locktite on the threads, hopefully that should keep the ball on the truck.
thanks,
Bill

When traveling long distances on rough roads say arkansas you need to check your ball and retighten at any stops.

Re: TIRE PRESSURE

Ok, let me ask you this... I just looked at my trailer (for something else) and noticed it says inflate tires to 32 psi, but my tires say 50 psi max.

So when you say to do 50, what does your trailer say on it?? Why would you not follow the trailer??

I have usually inflated to 45psi, so I'm now wondering what to do.

Re: TIRE PRESSURE

Okay im going to add my 2 cents alot of people around here put regular car tires on there trailers because there cheaper,im a firm beleiver in using tires manufactured for trailer use i just bought a set last month it says 50psi max on them too, thats what i put in them, the max air gives a better ride, the air in tires fluctuate with the temperature and the driving anyway.

Why follow the trailer??its the tires that carry the load and stress of the the road.and its the tires manufacture suggestion.

Ron, well, that was actually my question... I do put trailer tires on there.

What do you do on your car?? You car has a recommendation for the front and back tires... do you follow that or the MAX pressure that's on the tire?? Would you follow the same or different for a boat trailer??

Re: TIRE PRESSURE

The tires on my Yukon (michilen lt m+s) can handle 80 psi but the truck rides rough at that. This just means that these same tires could be installed on a 1 ton truck..pumped up and carry a huge load.
To get ride and handleing we I keep them at 35-45. When towing and loaded up I up the pressure in the rear tires to 55 psi. Trailer tires run best close to max. It reduces heat. What screws up a tire....Heat! :) :) :) :)
