Motor runs great, but I would like to make sure I get it back to factory specs as far as timing, idle and idle under load. I have tinkered too much with it to know how far in/out of adjustment it is at this point.

I have the shop manual and I read the procedures on setting timing, etc...
at minimum, you need a timing light and a big tub of water. Those two things are not available to me. I thought I read somewhere that you can just take a plug out and put a wooden dowl or something in there and rotate the flywheel until you get TDC. Will this work and which cylinder should I look for TDC on? Cylinder one? Thanks in advance for any tips, tricks advice or good natured ribbing.
