I am interested in striped bass fishing. I own an
18 foot boat with no fancy fish finders.Due to the size of the boat, I don't think ocean fishing is an option. Any sharpies out there that can give me some tips that could land me a striper? Thanks!

Striped Bass, including those of keeper size, can be found in bays, rivers, and along the coastline throughout the Northeast. An 18 foot boat should be able to fish hundreds of different areas that would hold stripers. A fishfinder in not a necessity, although it is very convenient to help find structure that could hold fish. I suggest you do some research on striped bass fishing to learn the various techniques used for different areas and situations. I've been fishing for stripers for 20 years and I'm still learning! There a many magazines, books, and websites devoted to striper fishing, and they contain tons of information to help you land this truly wonderful fish.
Good luck, and remember, practicing conservation will allow our children to fish for these fish too. :)

An 18 foot boat is big enough for the type of fishing you want to do. For fishing saltwater rips, my experience is to use live eels spinning rods with circle hooks long leaders and a 4 oz weight. Leave the bail open as you drift, when the fish hits, let it run for several seconds before you close the bail and set the hook. In the back bays poppers and spooks for top water and rattle traps for bottom retrieval. Fly fishing for stripers is a blast. Just need the right fly.

I have good success with chunk mackerel and herring. When using bait like that, you can fish off the bottom using a slider called a fish finder which allows the bait to float up off the bottom or you can just float the bait if the are feeding closer to the top. I have caught them using both approaches.

Live lining eels is great too. A study showed stripers have a predatory response to eels that does not depend on hunger.

You can also use tubes (long red surgical type) with a sea-worm at the end.

Stripers are migratory. During this time of the year they are down around the Chesapeake and head up the east coast to around MA and sometimes even ME in the spring. In the Fall, around Oct-Nov they head back South.

It would probably benifit you to do an inshore or whatever 1/2 or full day stripe bass charter and I'm shore that the captain would most likely give you a few tips if asked. The only one draw back is that once in a while you don't catch fish.
The other thing you could do is find a mentor that would take you under his wing and teach you quite a bit of what he knows.

I don't know your area. 1st get yourself a chart. Look for structure, rocky bottom ,rips, drop offs. Do you use bait or artificial lures,do you chum?
Stripers are called rock fish but that is not necessary true. From my boat I fish in water as shallow as 10" and then again I fish in waters 150' deep for stripers. We have a rocky shore line with drop offs. Fish white water or white foamy water. I'm bassically a bait fisherman, live bait or chunk bait. Is bait easily acessable to you. Look for other boats fishing for stripe bass and remember them spots and then go fish them when noboby is there.

Have fished shinnecock bridge(Hampton Bays) in the 80's.Tied up to the bridge(dusk) and used a large white wooden (8inch)plug. Let the current do the work for you.
Caught a 36 pounder. YES, (thirty-six)had it weighed at the tackle shop.
Good luck.
Kevin
