Does anyone have any tips for pulling a heavier skier (250 lbs) with a fairly heavy 1992 17' Renken w/ 130 hp motor?

trade your boat in on a lighter model with a bigger engine.

One ski or two? either way have just one other person in the boat up front as far as possible and drop the hammer to get the skiier out. once out and on top then ease back to whatever the skier wants. If its a slalom ski you may be forced to drop a ski as you are a bit underpowered for pulling slalom skiers out, unless they are very experienced at dealing with a slow pull out of the water. I get up dragging a leg which gets the ski on top much quicker but thats just how I learned so its natural, others think its nuts because I don't use a double boot but the best skier ever(andy mapple) used a rear toe plate so I guess I can too. If you do drop a ski toss out an old orange life jacket as the skier drops the ski then you have a general area to look for your ski. they have a nasty habit of turning over which makes them mighty tough to find.

Worse comes to worse you can always do a dock start. Using 2 skis should really be much of an issue, you may just have to drag in the water for a few seconds to lt the boat get speed before you stand up.

What pitch prop are you running? Do you have trim tabs?

Last weekend I got a 240 lb beginner skier up on the first try with nice pair of wide combo's using 17' Bayliner with 135HP running 14x19 pitch prop ($150) and Smarttabs ($135) with 3 on board weighing 170, 170, 220lbs. If you have a correctly pitched prop and trim tabs you should be able to get up without resorting to dock starts.

Back in the day we'd ski 200 pound guys behind a 40HP Boston Whaler.

Keep your skis close together and make yourself into the tightest ball you can (knees to the chest) and don't stand up until the boat has planed and the water starts to feel firm underneath. Good luck!

Re: tips for heavy skier

thanks for the suggestions...i've skied on this boat plenty with my father driving...the other day was the first time i tried it with a friend driving so i was just curious if there were certain ways to go about it. Since then i've realized we had a small leak in the stern and quite a bit of water had built up in the back of the boat. The boat was having trouble planing without a skier. we also just bought a hydrofoil. Hopefully that'll help a little. Thanks again.

the water in the rear end probably had something to do with it... but dragging a foot for slalom helps a ton and isn't hard to do no matter how you learned.. unless of course you've got two plate bindings on your ski...

dock start or hop up is fun no matter how you look at it... :D

The more you go

The more you glow.

Ski often and get some skills. They will come with time.

Only compare your skiing with your skiing....Only challenge yourself to perform at your personal best...

Your best will get better and better. Know your limits and get ready to eat some water when you approach them.

Enjoy and stay safe
