Replaced gimbal bearing and seal. I have the alighnment tool and its off. Question is how can i tell if the engine is actually off or the gimbal is turned? It feels even but i would assume even the slightest could throw it off

Ayuh,...... Step #1 in the process,.....

Ya slip the bar through the bearin', into the coupler as best you can, then Slam the bar, right, left, up, down,......

The rod doesnt even go into the splines, it hits in the bottom of the splines. I just want to make sure the engine actually needs to be alighned, how would i know for sure if its the engine or the gimbal bearing since the bearing does move in all axis. I read somewhere to get a 1 inch pipe and insert that into the splines and this should tell you, that the best way?

No. Get the proper alignment tool. Had a customer line his up like that, on vacation up here, Made it two miles in to the apostle Islands, blew the coupler. Luckily we were able to get him going by the next day, as his family waited in the parking lot. Still cost him a very expensive tow, and a day of downtime.

Easy to even eyeball the GIMBAL bearing, which *GIMBALS*, so it points at the coupler. Watch Chris's video!

For severely misaligned engine, a 1" pipe can give you an indication which direction you need to start moving, but does not take the place of the alignment tool. Chris's Alignment and gimbal videos explain very well the process. They are in his signature.

Other than Monty Python videos, the best one you can watch is Chris's how a gimbal works and why it needs to be centered on the coupler splines. Then watch his alignment video.
