Tip: Protect your prop, lower end or outdrive . . .

Read a recent thread where a car tried to squeeze behind a boat and trailer while poster was backing up and the car hit his O/B or outdrive!

No question drivers out there drive like A-holes!
We need to protect our motors when trailering because since most of our outboards and outdrives are black they are hard to see especially when they are raised.

If you're stopped at a light and some old person, or anyone texting, talking, adjusting radio or just asleep at the switch taps into your motor chances are you are done for the season awaiting parts to come in from China! Even is they have the parts in stock it will take weeks to get your rig back.

If one has something hanging out of their truck or trunk they know enough (or by law) to put a red flag on the end.

Give others a fighting chance to at least see there is something sticking way out from the back of your boat. Even if you trailer with an O/B down it's probably still all black (and so is my prop too) as it sticks out 2-3 feet from the transom.

I rarely ever see a trailered boat go by me on the h-way with some something bright or flag like off the back off their prop or outdrive. But the same person when taking home a $10 2x4 from Home Depot they are sure to slap a flag on. If only by law. IMO it should be a law for towing a boat too with a prop sticking out because of the transom saver.

Wonder how much your lower unit costs to replace, SS prop or aluminum prop.

I rarely ever see someone on a bicycle wearing a brightly colored vest. They wear a helmet but we still can't see them. I'd never get on a bike without my orange biking vest!

To reduce getting your engine whacked by probably 95% . . . I've ALWAYS used a small plastic store bag in bright yellow, pink or orange. One thick rubber band around an ear or two holds it on nicely.

Ya I know . . . people might feel it cheesy using a plastic brightly colored store bag for free, but they would probably pay like $10 in a store for . . . "The Deluxe Prop Sack :D

No such thing, but maybe I'll invent one. I'm surprised stores like Iboats, West, Gander etc don't hand them out for free as prop trailering protectors. They could put their ad on it like stores do!

Here is a shot of the rig "with prop bag attached" taken on Sat. AM just before an hour and 45 min trip each way to the Ticonderoga launch on Lake Champlain.

When I was still trailering, I used a Prop Sox on my prop. Durable hard plastic that protects the blades (and your shins) and makes it more visible on the road. And I agree, why doesn't iBoats have these?

I've also seen canvas covers customized with the boat name.

And even hard plastic, lockable cases.

The bad: And I thought I had a money making opportunity here!
The good: Look at all that start up seed money you just saved me. There goes my initial public offering (IPO) for the "Prop Sack" :D

you know the "triple" light set that is suppose to be on the trailer? I welded a bracket on the lower unit end of my transom saver and mounted a triple led bar on it with a 2 prong disconnect. Now there are annoyingly bright red leds less than 1' from the prop!

I have a couple red penet flags hanging off my downrigger arms. They stick out almost even with the raised lower-end. Eveyone ask me why I have the flags back there. Just for this reson!

Maybe just paint the whole boat orange. If someone can't see the boat in front of them then there isn't much hope for them anyways.

I painted my trolling plate red, and put some reflectors on it. (paint is faded now, so it's time to repaint)
