Tiny Tach or Hardline for Tohatsu MFS 20?

Hi Folks,

I'm going to add a small tach/hour meter to my Tohatsu 20. Any recommendations or personal experience between the Tiny Tach and the Hardline models? The boat doesn't have a dash or console, so I'm leaning toward a small unit that can be attached to the front of the motor via double sided tape.

Cheers,

John

The standard or re settable Hardline hour/tach meter works fantastic on 4 strokes, small, very easy installation. You could install it inside cowl once you know your max rpm at wot, or outside if with sufficient lower front pan or side tiller available space.

Thanks SR,

I just ordered the Hardline combo Tach/Hour Meter. Looks like plenty of room on the front of the motor to mount it like yours.

In general iI love my tinytach. Be aware that they aren't truely water proof. I lost my first one due to moisture after two years. I built a serious case around my new one. I think they leak around the wire seal in the case.

Thanks for your input. I have ordered the Hardline dual tach/hour meter. When it arrives I'll take a close look for any potential of water intrusion and if needed put some extra sealant on any areas that look suspect.

Hardline does not have a "sealed" cable coming inside case, nor uses a ground wire, it's entirely induction on both cable's ends and perfectly factory case sealed, just insert cable deeply inside a long groove and that's it, won't have moisture issues as TT has. Just follow simple installation provided and enjoy.

Thanks, good to know. That reinforces my decision to go with the Hardline over the Tiny Tach as there is a recent thread about the Tiny Tach having water intrusion issues. On the MFS 20 there is a nice flat horizontal spot in front of the fuel coupler that looks like a good mounting point.

John, once you have installed tach where you want it prefferibly on flat surface, you can route the wire inside engine through lateral pan rubber grommets used for remote cables. Tach comes with 2 screws or proper two sided tape lenght.

Hardline Tips,

Add a small drop of finger nail paint on exposed tach & pick up cable ends, as has happened before, moisture gets inside cable's end specially if working outside cowl, corrodes the portion inside tach's groove and unit stops worlking. If you like, once cable rests at lower groove tight, fill with silicone to seal and hold better cable there.
