I’ve seen videos where they remove all spark plugs, ground out the wires open throttle to WOT and use a timing light on number one cylinder while cranking the engine over. Is this an acceptable way to set timing?

It is if the flywheel key is intact.-----What motor ?----The timing on modern motors is set at the factory and does NOT go out of adjustment.-----What is your motor doing / not doing ?

It’s an 85 xp 150. Motor was rebuilt and broken in, but then sat for 9-10 years due to my father having surgery and not being able to use it. I got a fresh set of rebuilt carbs for it, just wanted to make sure that was an acceptable method for setting timing.
