I just installed a rebuilt powerhead on my '87 merc v-150 outboard. The serial number of the rebuilt powerhead is A168006. How can I get the correct timing specs for that powerhead?

A service manual will have them. The V6 motors are pretty much the same. Try 0-9* ATDC for idle pickup and max spark advance of 21* BTDC.

Thanks Chris. I didn't know seloc manuals had those specs. I just verified the year and model of the powerhead. I'll follow up in a manual next. Much appreciated!

Fred, A Merc service manual will be better than Seloc. I use the Seloc/clymer today, but I had a Merc Service manual first, and learned a lot of what is wrong about the aftermarket service manuals.

PM Carlhome with your serial number. He may have a link for you.

Re: Timing specs for 85 merc v-150

We originally set up the timing and sync using the procedure and specs from a 1987 merc service manual. I'm about to order the 1985 merc manual to make sure I have the right timing spec for the replacement powerhead. I read somewhere that the timing should be retarded a couple degrees for break in, and it seems like the numbers you recommended were about 2 degrees below where we set it. Was that your intention, or just a coincidence?
Thanks much for your help,
Fred

Just a note on tha idle timin'. It doesn't always run right at "factory" specs.

First ya gotta make sure all 'electrics ( junk tha idle stabilizer) and fuel delivery is as its suppose ta be. Then ta get it right it needs ta be in tha water, in gear. Don't need ta take it off tha trailer ta do this. Set tha idle timin' wherever you and tha motor is happiest. No need ta "retard" for break-in......Just something we've learned over tha years............
