Timing question

I have posted here numerous times all for the same motor. Anyways.
I have an '87 28hp Evinrude SPL
My question is the spark timing automatic on these models or was that for the early 70's motors?
The reason I am asking is because I have noticed a few things going on that might be related to the timing.
-Hard starting
-The timing adjustment on this motor only has one nut on the side by the towards the block and I can turn it with my hand
-Can get to idle rough but then when the throttle is beyond idle the motor wants to die and I have to throw it almost to WOT.
-I was running in idle and pulled the top cylinder plug cap off and the motor didn't sound any different. Dies when I remove lower.
- Fuel pump seems to be running fine, Hard primer bulb.
-Cleaned the single carb out. Didn't remove the lower plug that drains the bowl though. Already very clean
-The compression is fine according to a guy I had look at it. Solved the stuck primer solenoid problem though
-I switched the coils around and nothing changed.
- Spark plugs are wet with oil and deposits when running 50:1
- I just added some Seafoam to gas to decarb out the whole motor to see if that helps at all Not much different besides all the black crap on my driveway
-When I do get to WOT the boat RPM's sometimes go up or down after a few minutes.
Any ideas where to start?
I am guessing I have an air leak somewhere or the timing is way off. Power Pack? I have a lot of testing to do. :(

Re: Timing question

What do the spark plugs look like after running at WOT for an extended period of time?

TMD

Re: Timing question

I have not checked them right after running WOT but after a quick trip on the water I have checked and they are gummed up with the dark deposit on it. I have checked the Fuel/oil ratio numerous times and have adjusted the slow speed adjustment knob.
I do have a spark from each plug but I have not put them on a spark tester.

Thank you
