Using Reeves method. All is pretty straight forward. Dont know history of motor but previous owner hed the flywheel marked with white paint at TDC. No indicator marks that you could have seen with a light at any other mark. my question is how would you set timing at 24 degrees with the Reeves method(4 degrees less than the book calls for) without having a mark on the 24 line so you could see it with the timing light? You are trying to see the 24 mark line up with the pointer with the timing light at cranking speed with the throttle set at full with plugs out and light hooked up to number one? right?

I painted a small white line on 24 degrees and had someone crank motor and adjusted till 24 mark was showing in the timing light lined up with the pointer on the motor. It was off but not by much.

Did I do this right?

you have to jump the solenoid to turn it over. the control has to be in forward and all the way forward. WOT, key switch on, but with it in forward the key will not turn the engine, due to neutral safety switch.

Thanks for the reply. I did that and all is good. My real question was about the marks on the flywheel. Why have the TDC highlighted when your trying to get the 24 degree line to line up with the pointer. I guess its to set the pointer? Anyway, I ran it as stated and set timing at 24 degrees(-4 from book) with shift lever at full throttle. Just wondering how I would have done it had I not put a mark(white nail polish, good to have daughters) on the 24 degree line? No way to see 24 mark with timing light without white mark. By the way, I plan on doing it again because boat was not in gear, I had the shift lever pulled out in the warm up mode and pushed all the way forward. Will redo with it in gear, all the way forward, key on and jump starter.
