I have an 84 Mariner 115HP, serial 6527950. I have rebuilt the powerhead, and now I'm trying to time and synchro it. Move #1 cylinder to TDC, but timing marks on flywheel are about 180 degrees off from the timing tab. I changed the crankshaft during rebuild, was told it was from a 115HP. What's going on? Even with #1 at BDC, the timing tab still doesn't line up with anything. The powerhead will run, but it starts hard and seems to have no power (timing issue most likely). I need some insight.....

Re: timing problem with 84 115HP

How did you pull the flywheel off the original crankshaft? By first removing all the center-hub bolts, then pulling the center hub off the crankshaft?

If so, I would say that the flywheel got reassembled to the hub, 180 deg out from what it's supposed to be.

All 99 CI Inline Merc crankshafts (standard production models, that is - not racing versions) are the same, so it's virtually impossible to have a crankshaft that's 'clocked' differently from the other.

I'd expect that it would hardly run at all with the flywheel magnets 180 deg from where they should be!

I'd align #1 cyl to your best guess of TDC, then unbolt the flywheel from the center hub and rotate it until the TDC mark is aligned with the timing pointer. There is only way to orient the flywheel on the bolt holes such that this will happen. One hole off in either direction will be very obvious as nothing will line up.

I expect you'll find that it runs a lot better with the flywheel in that position too!

BTW, just so we're on the same page, TDC on #1 is when the piston is closest to the spark plug. Silly I know but that is a very important assumption!!

HTH and let us know what you find.........ed

Ed's right........ the timing marks and stuff need to be dead on to set this critter up right. And setting it up wrong could likely kill it.

-W

Re: timing problem with 84 115HP

After writing this post, I figured out exactly what Ed stated. So, now that the flywheel is on the right way, I timed the powerhead per the instructions in the manual. Initial timing was set to about 6 degrees, and max advance timing to about 20 degrees. I took it to the lake, and it wouldn't run for crap. It took a long time to get it running, and it would only run with the throttle advanced. Anything close to idle and it would stall. Almost think now I have a fuel problem (starving for gas). I don't know anymore. Is there an easy way to test the CDI units to make sure they are working?

Prolly needs the carbs cleaned then.. unless the new crank had hosed reed blocks.

-W
